　　农历七月为中国的盂兰鬼节，传说在这个月份，阴间中门大开，游魂野鬼会到阳间“游玩”，为了令“它们”无暇四出寻找替身，戏班会在农历的七月十五至十七，於空地上搭起竹棚戏台上演神功戏，娱乐四方鬼神。

　　彩排室内，二帮花旦阿敏和武生贵哥正为快将开锣的神功戏彩排，老班主啸天 （林威 饰） 聚精会神地看着大戏，忽然在二胡声中，彩排室的大门被推开，走进来的是啸天出走多年的儿子宗华 （张家辉 饰）。啸天重见儿子喜不自胜，但宗华离家拼搏多年，最後落得生意失败的下场无奈回家，非常失意，加上同母异父的妹妹晶晶不断奚落，令宗华更加难受。

　　开戏前夕，啸天突然心脏病发入院，危急间只能将剧团交给宗华带领，剧团的花旦小燕 （刘心悠 饰）感激班主多年来知遇之恩，故落力协助宗华这个外行人接管剧团，演出神功戏，双方更互有好感。自宗华加入剧团，除了要面对各团员的冷淡对待及单打外，更感到剧团的气氛诡异，怪事连连。医院内，宗华遇上负责运送屍体的女工，对方警告宗华要在这个农历七月份外小心…其後宗华渐渐在家里、戏棚甚至走在街上，都不断看到不可思议的景像，有几次更差点令宗华吓破胆及有生命危险。愈是接近开锣日期，晶晶、小燕及其他团员都不时做出怪异及无法解释的行为，宗华不明所以，为保众人安全唯有提出取消演出。然而锣鼓声中，无论宗华愿不愿意，一场恐怖的戏码其实已一早在暗中上演…
